Chrome: Text Editor

Bear with me as this is my first post not related to Gmail and Inbox by Gmail. This post is specifically to Chromebooks and Chromeboxes, although this tip does work on any chrome browser, regardless of your OS.

Have you ever been working along and just needed to jot something down real quickly? You don't want to take the time to navigate to drive (or keep), click on new, choose Docs and wait for that to open. You also are pretty sure you don't need to save whatever you are about to jot down, at least not immediately.

Guess what, you don't have to. Just open a new tab and type the following:

data:text/html, <html contenteditable>

and hit enter. It will look like nothing happens but the screen will become a notepad text editor.  Note, this is a very basic, no frills text editor. Simply put, it just lets you type like in the screen shot below:

  1. I've put it in the bookmark bar and deleted the text, so now it shows with the (blank) favicon only. Use it very often.
