Inbox by Gmail: Signatures (Updated)

Recently I have been using an extension for Inbox call MixMax, which bills itself as a complete productivity suite for Inbox and Gmail. I can say it very much does fit the bill.

For many users, lack of robust, feature filled signature capability has been a very sore spot with Inbox. Many people want signatures in their reply, not below the entire thread, and others want multiple signatures for different accounts, not just the primary gmail account. Still others want a more complete HTML formatted signature that does not get lost if you go into the signature settings a second time.

Mixmax solves all of these issues. Simply setting up your signatures in MixMax Signature settings gives you the option to have a different signature for each account, format the text,and place the signature above any quoted text. If you already have signatures set up in classic Gmail - after installing MixMax, you can simply go to the classic Gmail settings page, and there is a button to copy the signature settings into MixMax. These will also apply to Inbox by Gmail if that is the interface you are using.

Update 9/9/15: Today, the Inbox team began rolling out the ability to copy and paste HTML formatted text into your signature. The HTML, and any included images will be preserved across all platforms in your signature.

It should be noted that Inbox signatures still are only appended upon sending the email using your primary @gmail.com account.

Note, the HTML formatting will be lost if the user returns to settings. If you do not return to the settings after creating this signature all will be preserved. For example:

1. Create a signature with HTML (e.g. big red font)
2. Click Done
3. Send test email to self
4. Observe correctly applied signature
5. Go back to Signature Settings 

Result: 

The HTML formatting in the signature has been removed. 

Update 7/23/15: Yesterday, the Inbox team rolled out a new help text in the signature settings box. Once you turn on the signature feature you will be presented with grey text informing you that "Your signature will be added to your message after you send it." This hopefully will alleviate any confusion that has arisen recently where users are reporting they don't see their signature when composing the email.

Update 5/28/15: Inbox by Gmail announced at Google I/O today that signatures have finally come to Inbox by Gmail. Users will be able to set a signature from a new Signature Tab in the Inbox Settings. The signatures will sync across all devices, Web, Android, and iOs. It is important to note that with this release Rich Text Formatting is still not officially supported. Copying and pasting RTF signature will work on the Web, as well as most of the time on mobile, however some formatting may be lost if copying and pasting in mobile.

I want to make sure this is clear, this is a basic signature, no images, no logos, no icons. It is similar to what you will find in the signature line in the Android Gmail app, except you can possibly have more than one line.

It also should be noted that the signature feature will not append the signature to any Send As accounts you may be using.

UPDATE 3/11/15: The Inbox by Gmail team has confirmed that signature support is currently in development, however no date of availability is know yet.

UPDATE 1/16/15: I just discovered that Gmelius, best known for its Classic Gmail feature customization, has released an extension for Inbox by Gmail. You can download the extension here. I am still playing around with the extension, but the best feature is support for multiple signatures for multiple accounts.  It basically copies over the signatures you setup in Classic Gmail and inserts them accordingly. The Gmelius Inbox extension adds a few menu items to the left side menu that allow you to configure Inbox, Messages, Compose. Below is the Compose Option setup screen. Please note Gmelius Chrome Extension for Inbox is still in Beta Release.

I have been seeing repeated requests for signature capabilities in Inbox by Gmail. Many have even said the lack of this feature is a deal breaker for them, and they refuse to use Inbox by Gmail until this feature is included.

Yes it is true that Inbox by Gmail doesn't have signature capabilities built in, but that does not mean you need to go without a signature in Inbox by Gmail.  I have come across two options for adding signatures to emails generated in Inbox by Gmail.

1. Chrome Extension: (as of 3/17/15 this extension is no longer available)
Developed by kubrickology, this extension adds a menu item at the bottom of the Inbox by Gmail menu list. Clicking on the menu opens a popup window that allows you to create your signature, including images and links.

This option has a two notable shortcomings. First, it only allows for one signature, so if you have multiple email addresses you are out of luck customizing your signatures. Second, it does not add the signature to forwards or replies.

2. Wisestamp
Wisestamp has been providing custom email signatures for multiple mail products for some time now. Recently they have added support for Inbox by Gmail.  Wisestamp has a the capabilities to include social icons, interactive social capabilities, various templates, and profile images.  The free version has Wisestamp branding in the signature. Premium features add multiple signatures, additional templates, custom icons, reply/forward signatures, all for $4/month.
