Inbox: Save to Google Drive

Update 4/29/16: A small new feature has just been spotted in Inbox by Gmail. Users have been clamoring for a long time to have Google Drive integration. Well it seems the integration has begun.  Just today I noticed a new little icon when previewing a file attachment in Inbox, the Save to Drive icon. This should definitely bring some happiness to many Inbox users.

<<<<<End Update>>>>>

I've been seeing a lot of questions about saving attachments to drive from the new Inbox by Gmail.  We all know the capability exists for Classic Gmail, but how do we accomplish this in Inbox by GMail.

Saving file attachments is actually rather simple, but the process does depending upon the type of device you are working with.

Chromebook/Box:

  1. Click on the attachment to open the preview from within the email
  2. Click the Down Arrow above the preview to start the download process
  3. In the Save File as dialogue box, navigate to the Drive folder you want to save the file in
Windows/Mac:
  1. Make sure you have Google Drive installed on your computer and set up to sync the Google Drive folder
  2. Click on the attachment to open the preview from within the email
  3. Click the Down Arrow above the preview to start the download process
  4. In the Save File as dialogue box, navigate to the Drive folder you want to save the file in
Mobile:
  1. Click on the file attachment
    1. If the files is an office type file, you will be prompted to open the file in the corresponding Google Drive application
      1. Once the file is opened, you will have a menu option that is a Person with a plus sign.
      2. Select the option to Edit with Others - Save as Google XXXX File
    2. Other file types you will see a three dot menu option in the top right
      1. Select the Share option
      2. Choose Google Drive
      3. Select the folder/location
As you can see, although not directly embeded in Inbox by Gmail, it is possible to easily save attachments to drive using the above methods.

  5. Actually, no you can't. For a business of any decent size, you simply *cannot* have every person setup with a local Google Drive sync; it will corrupt your company files. Therefore, for the HUGE MAJORITY of the working world, you must be able to save the file directly to Google Drive on the web, not your local machine. Doesn't seem to be any problem whatsoever doing this with Gmail. For some reason, however, Google hasn't made this SIMPLE INTEGRATION possible with THEIR OWN PRODUCT; i.e. Google Inbox. I would love to use Inbox, but instead I have to chock it up to a childish consumer product because of this asinine oversight. Yes, I'm obviously pissed. The product has been out for a year now and they still haven't made this unbelievable obvious capability available. It should never have gone live without it.

    1. Speaking "childish"...
So, you are correct, the system doesn't allow it natively, and yes, that is frustrating. But I've found an easy work around. the 5x per week that I need to save to drive, I click the GMAIL button (under drafts, trash, spam, contacts etc.) and then do it through gmail. It isn't a great workaround, but it doesn't take too much time. This fairly frustrating issue is not nearly enough for me to not use Inbox. One of the best things to happen to email, since email.

    2. Wow, did not know that you could reach the "old" gmail once you made the switch. Many thanks for this, it is a great workaround!

  7. This is a nuisance for sure. My solution is to turn off the automatic redirect from gmail to inbox. I have been trying to get comfortable with the way inbox groups messages for a few months and it is still hard for me to locate the most recent email in a thread. It is not intuitive to use for me. So by turning off the automatic redirect I kill two birds with one stone - get my Save to gDrive back and restore the message organization that makes more sense to me. Someday, I am sure Google will shut down the old service but until then I think I will stick with it.
