I have been seeing lots of requests in the Gmail Product Forum, and on G+ Communities, regarding hiding the thumbnails that appear below messages in Inbox by Gmail. The purpose of these thumbnails is to make it easy to find and open attachments. This feature makes it no longer necessary to dig through your emails, or even open them up for that matter, in order to open an attachment.
Two main issues that have been raised with these thumbnails is the use of screen space to display these and the inability to identify which is the latest version of the attachment. The first of these issues, for me, really is not a big deal. The second, I can see being an issue. How do you know if you are opening the latest version if there were many iterations of the file throughout the conversation? You really don't unless the file name has changed to reflect version history.
As a result of these two issues, many people have requested the ability to turn off, or hide, the thumbnails from the unopened messages. Up until today I would tell them this is just not possible. However, I have discovered a Chrome Extension that enables this, and other Inbox by Gmail tweaks. Power Google Inbox provides for 4 main tweaks in Inbox by Gmail as shown in the image to the right.

ReplyDeleteBtw I like the docking of the navigation menu in combination with compacting the navigation menu. You get to see (and click on) many options without scrolling

ReplyDeletehas noone even thought of the privacy issue? if i am in a public place, or at a friends or familys using a shared pc, in a room with my kids, i do not want my private pictures to come up in view for everyone to see. im glad i did not use an internet cafe in a shopping centre and use google inbox for the first time, i wouldnt have been able to look at my emails
ReplyDeleteYes, don't want my private (sometimes very private but not necessarily mine) pictures showing up in plain view. I also NEVER use the suggested items, and have to always searhc from computer, what was wrong with the old way that had to be replace with this nonsense.

ReplyDeleteOh thank god. I find them almost unbearably visually distracting. (btw the images on this page are slightly overlapping the text for me; thought you might want to know. I do have quite a small computer screen though.)
