Despite the fact that I see no need for mark as Unread, enough people were asking for this, so I went to work developing my very first Chrome extension. It is very basic, but it works. In order to mark the emails Unread, you need to clear out all of the read emails from your Inbox that you don't want marked as Unread again. Either mark them as done or snooze them. Now just click on the extension icon and you will see a new tab open that actually runs the script. Please note, it will give an error message but its a false positive. Either refresh Inbox by Gmail or wait for it to refresh on its own and all of the threads in the Inbox will now be Unread. Also note, I cant figure out a way to close that new tab that opened, so you will need to close that manually, sorry about that.

Thanks for creating this but I think you completely missed the point. I don't think a user would ever need to mark the entire inbox as unread, just individual messages. Inbox is nice in some ways but man it is annoying as hell in other ways! Thanks again.

DeleteCompletely agree. So many basic features are missing in Inbox. What I really like of Inbox is the Travel cards, which is still not so smart, the snooze and archive option. But what I really miss are Mark as unread, delete individual mail from conversation, and no way to disable the conversation so I delete individual mail.
DeleteI think the gap is that user clicks email and reads... decides it's important but can't action it immediately. Wants to unread 'bold' the title so that they don't miss it. This is the established workflow for a lot of people and why I'm at this page trying to work out how to unread an important message.

easier just to go into gmail and mark there as unread. Refresh inbox and voila!!

DeleteI think this is more embarrassing when entire inbox item would be unread. Actually I need to mark a single email unread because when my team will sit after me, they would find which email they need to act with. So I was intend to search this topic. I think you can try Scott, for single email unread chrome extension or inbox extension(I don't know though, inbox offer same feature the Gmail has). Thanks!

ReplyDeleteAlso, having thousands of emails (I read them, not archive them and not bundle all of them either) makes the extension useless as it triggers the error "max 100 threads"
Great extension, is it possible to make the opposite? It would be great to be able to make the e-mails that have been marked as done also marked as read

ReplyDeleteOne quick way to do it is to simply go to Gmail (see link on side left panel). Once in Gmail it is easy to mark one email as unread. It will then appear as unread in Google Inbox.
