Now don't get me wrong here, I love what I have and te current price just can't be beat. But there are some features that I just wish I had the option to have without having to create a new account with a custom domain. I mean I have had my @gmail.com account since forever, and I like how it has become somewhat of an extension of myself.
There are some features that are currently only available to Apps accounts that could be useful for personal accounts as well. Such as the launch announced today of expiration dates on shared documents, or some of the reporting capabilities that exist for drive in the Apps accounts.
Wouldn't it be great if Google offered an option to @gmail.com customers to upgrade to an apps account (for a fee of course) and not have to change their personal @gmail.com account?
These are the things that keep me up at night.

Though it's over a year old, I just came across this post. Perhaps you weren't in the same Google universe as I was. A very early user of Gmail, I was also one of the first to purchase the "Google Apps for Your Domain" product when it was first released, and I've been paying for an annual subscription since then. And I had owned my own name domain for years before. (I've been online since 1980.) Prior to the time when Google finally merged all their various services and universes, users of GAFYD, a paid product, were consistenly left out of updates and improvements that went to free Gmail users first. It often took months or longer for us to get the same features - even though we weren't big commercial accounts, we were forced to wait until they had jumped all the security and other hoops needed to make it viable for their big corporate clients before GAFYD users got their updates. Imagine how we felt? So I don't quite understand the basis of your complaint here. GAFYD users (who are now just business accounts with a single user) never got the improvements before the free product users. To some degree, I think this is till the case. We may get faster access to improvements specifically directed at business users (and I definitely have my domain set to allow the latest updates take effect for my one user immediately) but there may still be features that get to free Gamil before paid users simply because they don't need to go through that six-ways-from-Sunday security and other testing. With all due respect, I made the choice to pay for the supposedly better level of service, so it's hard to be sympathetic to the cries of people trying to do the same for free!
