Google Assistant: Shopping Lists

With Google Assistant about to be in the hands of tons of users through the Pixel phones and Google Home, I wanted to share a great organizing tip regarding shopping lists. In reality, this is nothing new as it already works with Google Now, but it will definitely become more ubiquitous with the Pixels and Google Home devices.

Shopping lists are a great feature of Google Keep. You can create the list, use check-boxes when doing the shopping to indicate that you already added them to you cart, share with a souse or roommate, and even add a reminder based on time or location.

The Google Assistant recognizes that Google Keep is where lists are stored in the google ecosystem, so when you tell the assistant to add something to your list it does so in Google Keep.  The great part about it is you can have many lists for many purposes in Keep and the Assistant will know which list to add an item to based on what you entered (in Google Now) or said to the Google Assistant.
Let say you want to add something to your Grocery list? Just say (or type) Add coffee to my Grocery list. Head over to Google Keep and you will see that coffee is now added to your Grocery list. Lets say you have multiple shopping lists, Groceries, Christmas, Birthdays, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, etc. all you have to do is say the add something to XXXX List and it will add the item to the proper list.  Even better, if you don't already have a list with that name, a new list will be created in Google Keep with the corresponding name

I was just showing this off to my wife using Google Now and she was very impressed. How many lists do you think you are going to use with this feature?

UPDATE 10/26/16: It seems this is only working from Google Now at this time. Using the Google Assistant, it creates a new shopping list called Google Assistant Shopping List.

  3. Main issue i have now is that if i add items to shopping list from my nexus 6p and my google home then end up on 2 different keep entries.

    1. Yeah there still is some inconsistencies such as that.

  4. Just unboxed the Home after selling spouse.com on multiple shopping lists. Boo. We've been using OurGroceries to manage lists for groceries, Lowes, Amazon, Costco, and might have to stick with that until the multiple shopping lists feature comes Home.

    1. Agree. We got an Amazon Dot for Christmas and switched over to OurGroceries (OG) after finding the Alexa skill for it. The thing that's amazing about this interface is that Alexa can add things to any of your lists in OG and once you've categorized your items there, you can easily shop your stores by aisle. Google Keep can't even dream of doing that. So until Google Assistant can interface with OG the same way as Alexa, it's going to be an also-ran in our house.

  5. Bizarre that you would keep an article up about something that doesn't work...

    1. It actually does still work with devices using Google Now and not using Google Assistant, as can be noted by my update at the end of the article

  6. What about a grocery list that calculates as you add stuff?

    1. google Keep, where the shopping list is created/stored does not have that capability

  7. Tried to add items with my Google Home and it creates a new Keep shopping list and adds all items to that. I say "Hey Google, add take out garbage to my Honey Do list" It says "take out garbage has been added to your shopping list." - "Take Out Garbage" #FAIL

  8. What did your 10/26 post say? I do not see it.

  9. Ok. But Google Keep is really not much of a shopping list app. The ones I've been using (Mighty Grocery & Our Groceries) let you organize items by aisle, making grocery shopping from a list so much easier. They also keep track of your items and which aisles they're in so when you add them, they go in the right order. This makes a simple note program like Google Keep (or even Evernote) look like a simpleton. And now, with Our Grocery's Alexa skill, I can add items to my Our Groceries list and they're automatically organized. It would be so nice if Google would come up with something like this.

    1. Completely agree! Having a partnership with a proper grocery list app would dramatically improve the Google Home functionality. I like Google Keep but not for groceries- it lacks for those details that make a grocery app work in organizing our household's shopping trips.

    2. Double that agreement. Google Keep and Evernote are pretty much useless as shopping apps compared to OurGroceries or Mighty Grocery. Also agree about the sweetness of the OurGrocries Alexa skill. Even after several weeks, I still get tickled when I'm prepping in the kitchen, tell Alexa to add something to the list, and it does so like magic! Google has some way to go to match this sort of functionality.

  11. I set up multple lists and I can change the headings to any list I want. ( Walmart, GNC, CVS, etc) However, when I ask google to add to my specific list it said Ive added that item to your list but it goes under the google assistant list. Then when I ask her what is on my Walmart list she says just that one item and not the other 6 things i have listed already under walmart. The google assistant list is the only thing she will add to or retrieve from when asked. How can I fix this

    1. It depends on how you are doing this. It works with Google Now (using the microphone) However it does not for the Google Assistant - see the 10/26 update above

  13. I've been using Our Groceries for a couple years. Just got a Google Home. Google should give you a choice of grocery list apps, same way it does for music apps.

  14. So can Google Home handle two different accounts; i.e. my wife's and mine. We each have separate shopping lists.

    1. No at this time only one account can be used. But you can share one of the lists with the other person
